This 46 second commercial by South African opposition party the Democratic Alliance, headed by Helen Zille, was recently banned by leading local television network the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The ad, titled ‘Ayisafani’ (meaning ‘it’s not the same’) takes on the corruption and mismanagement of President Jacob Zuma’s government since his induction as head of state in 2008.

The SABC’s Chief Operations Officer (COO) Hlaudi Motsoeneng, who was found to have lied about his qualifications including his high school certificate symbols, is said to have ordered the ad off air claiming that its content ‘incites violence’. Additionally, according to the Code of Advertising Standards of South Africa (ASA), adverts in the country do not permit attacking another product to promote your own..

But according to the Daily Maverick’s Mmusi Maimane, the SABC has not only banned this DA advert, but all their ads off the SABC’s 11 public radio stations nationwide - a cause for concern over media freedoms in South Africa.

The DA has since lodged a formal complaint with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

Did You Know…?

Every positive change–every jump to a higher level of energy and awareness–involves a rite of passage. Each time to ascend to a higher rung on the ladder of personal evolution, we must go through a period of discomfort, of initiation. I have never found an exception.
